A few weeks before flying to South Africa, Charlene of Monaco participated in the celebrations of St. Devote, a Monegasque tradition, with Prince Albert and their children. It was her last official appearance. One year ago, to the day.
Once upon a time, there was a princess who was surrounded by mystery… Since Charlene of Monaco left for South Africa, and even before, to support the work of her foundation last spring, the inhabitants of the principality were able to see the princess only for a few minutes, when she returned to Monaco. After six months of absence caused by health concerns, the wife of Prince Albert finally landed on Monegasque soil, November 8, 2021.
Within the walls of the principality, as everywhere else, we wonder about his long absence. And if many believe that his arrival in France marks his resumption of function, this is not the case. Shortly after her brief public appearance, Charlene was transported to a place out of sight, the time to complete her convalescence. Thus, one year ago, on January 26, 2021, Charlene of Monaco made her last official appearance with Prince Albert and their children, Jacques and Gabriella, during the celebrations of the Holy Day, a few weeks before flying to South Africa.
The last official appearance of Charlene of Monaco
As tradition dictates, “the celebrations of St. Devote began on January 26 with the arrival of the relics and the burning of the boat of St. Devote by Albert, Charlene, Jacques and Gabriella of Monaco,” reports then Royal Stories. The next day, “Prince Albert II and his wife, Princess Charlene, attended the mass in honor of St. Devote, patron saint of the Principality of Monaco. An important event in the public life of the Monegasque royal family, which took place in a small committee following the health crisis.
That year, the celebrations of Saint Devote, a young saint martyred around the year 304 in Corsica, whose body was found on a boat washed up off the coast of Monaco on January 27, were even more special for Jacques and Gabriella, then 6 years old. Under the watchful eye of their mother, the twins were allowed to help their father set fire to St. Devote’s boat, using their own torch. This time, without the usual festivities, like fireworks and gatherings.
Jacques and Gabriella, the real stars of the day
For the occasion, moreover, Charlene of Monaco had bet on a long red and black tweed coat signed by the Swiss brand Akris, before dressing in intense black, with for only colored detail, a raspberry beret, the next day. The whole embellished with a large cross for necklace. The prince had chosen a black suit, a white shirt and a red tie with light stripes. Arm in arm, the princely couple had made a sensation.
And as in each of their appearances, it is James and Gabriella who attract the eyes. This time, it is the little girl of 6 years who made sensation, stealing even the show to her brother, by appearing in a pale pink set signed Baby Dior, composed of a skirt and a coat.
